Review of the IV Portuguese HEMA Federation Meeting

Past november a small delegation of Gallaecia in Armis (Denís Fernández Cabrera e Iago Fernández Outeiro) and the AGEA-Corunha (Ton Puey) were invited by the Federação Portuguesa de Esgrima Histórica to teach lessons on longsword and rapier at the fourth edition of their annual meeting.

This two-day seminar, which gathered some forty fencers from the whole lusitan country, was aimed to introduce the participants to styles they don’t usually study: «Verdadeira Destreza» for the rapier and «Kunst des Fechtens» for the longsword. Additionally, some ideas were exposed and discussed on the purpose of tournaments, their use as a learning tool and possible rulesets and security regulations that may further this purpose.

However, the most rewarding experience was seeing in person people we had only met through internet fora, and getting to know many other friends that expanded our view on how the portuguese HEMA comunity is surging and evolving. Not only the guest’s hospitality was impressive, but the general warm reception of the attendees left us wanting to come again.

Hopefully, this will be yet another in a series of steps further approaching the HEMA communities of Galiza and Portugal, exchanging knowledge and practice.

We’ll be looking forwards to the next year!
